Southridge Winter Series: Super D Race Report
Mountain Bike Riders &bull 3 Hours Ago
We're about halfway through this year's winter series at Southridge in Fontana, CA with three of five races completed. Rather than doing the single-speed XC race this year, I decided to give the Super D a shot. Super D racing resides somewhere between down-hill racing and cross country. There should be enough pedaling and climbing to keep the long travel heavy DH bikes out of contention, but also is technical enough not to yield any advantage to… Full Story »

Bicycles offer exercise and transportation - Daily Democrat
Google Cycling news &bull Yesterday
Paul Erickson is an engineer who loves machines and exercising on his bicycle. In my opinion, the wheel is one of the most incredible history-changing technologies of all time. All of us who live in modern society either directly or indirectly use the wheel in some way, but for most persons the wheel is just something on our cars that need to be checked from… Full Story »

In between adventures
Up in Alaska &bull Feb 5, 2012
I am, at my core, a lazy person. I often tell people that the reason I aim for big expedition-style races is to establish an iron-clad excuse to pursue hours of adventure training. But sometimes I realize that the opposite is also true - I "train" so I can justify big adventures. Remove the adventure factor - either adventure as training, or training for adventure - and I start to display disconcerting impassivity for the hobbies I claim as passions. I'm beginning to realize that adventure might just be… Full Story »

Single, newly sexy
Up in Alaska &bull Feb 2, 2012
The Susitna 100 is just over two weeks away now: Cue the phantom pains. On Wednesday afternoon, I was carrying two big boxes of Beat's Iditarod drop-bag supplies when the weight of the top box shifted, I lunged to catch it, and slammed my pinkie toe into the couch leg, hard. I dropped to the ground, moaned, punched the couch, swore a bit. I convinced myself I broke my toe. It felt like I broke my toe. Before the white shock of pain even began… Full Story »

Portland racing legend on the mend after serious stroke
BikePortland.org &bull Feb 1, 2012
David Auker is a living legend in local and national bike racing circles. You might not know his name, but Auker was once one of the most feared racers on the west coast. He never signed a pro contract because he was too much of an independent spirit to go that route; but friends who… Full Story »

Shimano Di2 Front Derailleur - 1 Felt F1 Front Derailleur Mount -0
Rogue Mechanic &bull Jan 31, 2012
I had to address an issue last week on a client's bike that had to do with the front derailleur mount on his 2011 Felt F1. I did the frame-up build with Shimano Dura Ace Di2 in the early part of this past summer. This bike was not abused and I'd have to give a gold star to this client… Full Story »

Bike Test: 2011 Felt Virtue Expert - Vernon Felton's Review of the Felt Virtue Expert
Bike Magazine &bull Jan 30, 2012
Okay, now that that's out of the way, allow me to explain. Eddie McDonald is Felt Bicycle's media guy and about 6 months ago he sent me this Virtue Expert to test. Which I did. Then he asked for it back. So, I set about boxing it upand then, due to a confluence of leaky disc brakes and sundry broken parts, I found myself in need of the Virtue again, so I unpacked it and rode it some more. Remembering my promise, I vowed to send this bike off to Eddie, except by now it was time to head off… Full Story »

Felt Virtue Sport - Tested
Pinkbike.com &bull Jan 30, 2012
WORDS Mike LevyThose who like to ride mountain bikes in the classic sense of the phrase may often feel a bit left out here on Pinkbike, but the truth of it is that we can often be found out on the mountain earning our turns and enjoying all types of trails, not just those that require a truck and a downhill bike to get the most from. With an adjustable 120 or 130mm of rear wheel travel and an all around geometry set, Felt's Virtue series is intended for just that, slotting nicely into what is commonly referred to these… Full Story »

Favorite winter gear

Bella Vista TrailEarly this morning, Beat, Liehann and I rallied for a mountain bike ride before work. For me, it was a sluggish but beautiful ride. Every time I try to exercise first thing in the morning, it seems to take me at least two hours to warm up. Plus, my legs still felt mostly dead after Sunday's 50K run. But it was the most fantastic morning - calm, clear above the valley haze, and warm. Temperatures started at 40 degrees and inched close to 60 before we were done. It's the kind of beautiful, idyllic outing that could make… Full Story »
